Therapy Is For Everyone

 When I think about the month of January, two words initially come to mind, cold and dark. These things probably come to my mind first because they are two things I don’t really care for. In January, our days are short, and the nights are long. The holidays are over, and the silence can set in. We revert back to our typical routines and schedules, but are things feeling the same for you?

We often see that mental health can be particularly difficult around the holidays. The reasons why the holidays are hard can differ from person to person. Regardless of why it’s hard, many can agree that it is just a difficult time of year and that it doesn’t necessarily let up once the holidays are done. 

Our mental health needs attention sometimes, just like our physical health needs attention sometimes. If your shoulder is hurting, you may initially try to ignore it. If the pain continues, you might try icing it or taking Tylenol. If the pain still persists or even intensifies, you’d probably seek a provider (chiropractor, massage therapist, or primary care physician) for help. Mental health is no different. When the pain, loneliness, or whatever hard thing you’re holding, gets to be too much to carry, mental health providers are here to help. Everyone needs to check in on their mental health, just like they check in on their physical health.

Therapy is for everyone. If you’re curious about how it works, here’s some general information. You don’t need a formal referral to make an appointment; you just need to reach out. You don’t need a diagnosis or a specific label to come to therapy either. The length of time in therapy can vary greatly; sometimes people stay in therapy for a long time, sometimes a few sessions here and there is all they need. Your health insurance will often cover portions of the cost of therapy sessions, just like at the clinic or hospital. We encourage you to call your insurance company and ask how much they will cover. Many therapists will agree that being physically present with a client in the office is preferred, however, telehealth does allow for a level of convenience and accessibility to mental health services. Any of the Mindful Moments therapists can see you through telehealth regardless of where you are located within the state of South Dakota. 

Therapy is a confidential, non-judgmental space where you can be heard and your feelings are validated. Therapy is for everyone. Life can be hard, but you don’t have to go through it alone. We are here if you need us.
